This time of year, we use our ovens non-stop, so they get dirty pretty fast. Having some easy oven cleaning tips will come in handy this time of year or anytime you need to get your oven clean.
Chemist Recommended Non-Toxic Oven Cleaning
Cleaning your oven doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, if you use this easy non-toxic cleaning tips, you can keep up with your cleaning routine and your oven will always look good.
DIY Oven Cleaning Spray
The first thing to do when you want to clean your oven is to make a batch of Chemistry Cachet’s “Vinegar Cleaning Spray” which was first seen on page 13 of the Ebook.
I have found this spray does a great job of cleaning basic burnt spots and food on the oven. You can also use it on the glass door!

Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup 5% distilled white vinegar
- 1 tbsp concentrated dish soap
- 1 1/2 cup water
- Spray Bottle
- Handy Mushroom Funnel Everyone Loves
Directions:
- Add all the ingredients to a spray bottle.
- Before spraying, always give it a gentle shake.
- To use it on the oven, spray the entire oven surface, allow it to sit for a few minutes. Scrub the oven with a damp sponge. With a clean microfiber cloth (or regular cloth), wipe out the oven and remove any particles left.

Homemade Non-Toxic Oven Scrub
This scrub is really handy for the oven door which can have grease and food splatters, but you can also use this on all parts of the oven. This is another eBook recipe, if you don’t have our cleaning eBook, I highly recommend grabbing it here.
Ingredients:
- Cream of Tartar
- Water
- DIY Vinegar Spray from Above
Sprinkle cream of tartar on the oven door or around the oven anywhere that needs a scrub. Spray water on the tartar just enough to make a paste, then scrub in a circular motion with a sponge. Wipe off with a damp microfiber, follow up with the DIY vinegar spray.
Steam Clean With Water
If you have a handheld steamer (if you don’t, I love this one!), it makes the easiest item for oven cleaning. Hot steam melts away oil and grease caked onto the oven, plus it is completely safe for all surfaces and non-toxic. Steam cleaning is one of my favorite science-based home hacks!
Steam Clean With Vinegar and Lemon Juice
Remember this popular microwave cleaner we shared years ago? You can use the same method for your oven!! For this, all you need is an oven safe dish (like a dutch oven), add in 1 cup of water, 2 cups of vinegar, and a full squeeze of fresh lemon. Turn the oven to 425 degrees, and place the dish inside for about 1 hour. You want the mixture to boil for several minutes which releases the vinegar and lemon juice steam. After removing the dish, turn the oven off and let it cool off until it is safe to touch. Wipe out the inside with a microfiber cloth or sponge!
Make “Chemist Paste” For Burnt Food
Another eBook favorite is the chemist paste. Find the recipe here on our DIY grout cleaning post. This mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda works wonders for burnt food particles.
Use The Pink Stuff Scrub For Extra Bad Gunk
This miracle cleaning paste I have used for years is something I always keep on hand for when your oven is in bad shape. It can work on the toughest spots! This is my go to cleaning paste for glass shower doors, bath tubs, and even the oven. I had a reader tell me she had used everything possible to clean her oven and she even bought several store-bought “oven” cleaners without success. I recommended The Pink Stuff Paste and she said it worked amazing!
Why I Don’t Use The Self-Cleaning Mode On The Oven
I personally never use the self-cleaning option on the oven. The extreme temperatures can damage your oven and be dangerous. My oven repair company share this information with me when my old oven went out. Here is some more details from Southern Living.

My cookie sheets look awful…what is best way to clean them?
We have a pan/pot cleaner in the eBook that uses the baking soda and peroxide method. I also have luck with barkeeps friend and Bon Ami also! The Pink Stuff is also good for baking wear surfaces.
Can you use consintrated lemon juice? If so how much?
Yes, a tablespoon or so is fine to use
Aren’t most of the oven deposits burnt-on grease? If so, wouldn’t an alkaline cleaner work better than the acids (vinegar, cream of tartar)? I believe that the active ingredient in Easy-Off is still sodium hydroxide.
Nasty stuff. I once had an industrial hygienist tell me that, if used at our work site, we would have to glove to the elbows, wear safety glasses or a face shield, and protective clothing.
I am not a fan of strong basic cleaners like sodium hydroxide, you can get similar results using more home friendly acids. I have been testing homemade cleaners for decades, and these cleaners are the best. I do have an alkaline cleaning option in the Ebook, but it is using baking soda which is one of my favorites. Other than that, these cleaners get the job done well
