There is something about the scent of apples, pumpkin, cinnamon, and warm spices that instantly makes a home feel cozier. Even when it is still hot outside like it is here in Texas, adding a few autumn scents around the house makes it feel like fall has officially arrived.
Instead of using traditional plug-ins with overpowering chemical scents, you can make your home smell like fresh autumn nostalgia with a few science-based tips.
As a chemist and busy mom, I prefer removing odor-causing buildup first, then adding lighter seasonal scents where we will actually enjoy them. By cleaning first, you can make sure you aren’t trying to mask odors.
And did you know nostalgic fragrances are scientifically shown to evoke positive memories and may help boost your mood? That is one reason familiar autumn scents like apple, cinnamon, pumpkin, and warm spices can make your home feel especially comforting.
Here are 12 of my favorite ideas.

1. Start by removing trapped household odors
Before adding pumpkin spice or apple fragrance, tackle the odors already hiding around your home.
Wash or refresh items such as:
- Throw blankets
- Decorative pillow covers
- Washable curtains
- Entryway rugs
- Upholstered furniture
- Kitchen and bathroom trash cans
Also check the garbage disposal, dishwasher filter, washing machine, and other damp areas where odor-producing bacteria may grow. This step makes a noticeable difference because you are removing odor at its source instead of simply covering it with another fragrance.

2. Make a DIY autumn-scented cleaner
One of the easiest ways to carry a subtle fall scent through your home is by using it while you clean. If you would like to learn detailed science on how each ingredient works, be sure to read our thorough post here on making autumn cleaner.

Here is one of my favorite DIY autumn-scented cleaning spray recipes:
-
- 1 cup water
- 1 tbsp dish soap (make it Autumn dish soap)
- 1 tbsp Rubbing alcohol **
- 15 drops Autumn essential oil or jack on lantern essential oil
- Spray bottle
- Mushroom funnel (optional, but one of the best selling products we have shared on chemistry cachet 🙂 everyone loves it!)
** Use lemon-infused rubbing alcohol for the best scent! It removes all the scent of rubbing alcohol, not necessary, but it will make this smell the best.

Directions:
- Mix all ingredients into a spray bottle, give it a gentle swirl to incorporate everything.
- Spray your surface with this cleaner, then wipe off with a microfiber cloth, sponge, or swedish dish cloth.

This is a properly formulated DIY cleaner perfect for all types of surfaces. It is from our famous all-purpose cleaner on page 13 from the eBook with an autumn twist.
The result is a clean home with a soft autumn scent.
3. Use a plant-based pumpkin room and fabric spray
When I want something quick, I use a room and fabric spray with transparent, plant-based ingredients.
This Ginger Pumpkin Air + Fabric Spray has warm notes of pumpkin, ginger, spice, and vanilla. I love that it can be used to refresh both the air and compatible fabrics. I also tried the Santal & Tonka scent which is notes of sandalwood, cardamom, tonka bean & amber. It is a great option for those who don’t like the sweet and spicy scents. I honestly love all of their fall scents though!
Lightly mist in the air or on items like throw pillows, blankets, and furniture.
4. Choose a healthier fall candle
Candles create an ambiance that room sprays and diffusers cannot quite replicate. The flickering light is part of what makes a home feel especially cozy in the fall.
When shopping for a healthier candle, look for brands that disclose their fragrance ingredients and clearly explain what type of wax and wick they use. Soy, coconut, and beeswax candles are popular alternatives to conventional paraffin candles, but the complete formulation and fragrance transparency matter more than one marketing term.
I love Grow’s plant-based candles!
5. Diffuse an apple orchard essential-oil blend
Apple scents are perfect for the beginning of fall because they smell fresh without being overly sweet.
An apple cider essential oil works especially well in the kitchen or living room. I also recommend diffusing intermittently instead of running a diffuser continuously all day.

6. Make a fall stovetop potpourri
A simmer pot is one of my favorite ways to make the kitchen smell like autumn using ingredients I already have. One of my favorite ones is this homemade fall stovetop potpourri recipe with fresh, natural ingredients.
This combines real apples, oranges, cinnamon, clove, and apple cider.
You can customize this recipe with cranberries, rosemary, ginger, pear slices, or leftover citrus peels. It is also a great way to use apple peels and orange ends that might otherwise be discarded.
7. Prepare freezer-ready simmer-pot kits
This is one of my favorite time-saving ideas for busy fall days.
As you prepare certain foods, save apple peels, citrus ends, cranberries, and small pieces of ginger in a freezer-safe container. When you want the house to smell cozy, place the frozen ingredients in a pot with water, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves. When I cut up apples and oranges for my kids, I always save the peels for this.
These also make thoughtful fall gifts. Dry or dehydrate the ingredients, place in a jar or freezer-safe package with simple simmering instructions.
8. Give your entryway a fall fragrance reset
Your entryway is the first thing guests see and smell. Start by thoroughly cleaning it with the DIY autumn cleaning spray from this post. Wash or vacuum the doormat, clean nearby rugs, wipe down the door, and refresh any upholstered benches or baskets. Shoes, damp fabrics, pet hair, and outdoor debris can all contribute to musty odors.
Once everything is clean, add cinnamon brooms for simple fall decoration and a cozy seasonal scent. Removing odor-causing residue first helps the autumn fragrance smell fresher and last longer. I love adding cinnamon brooms from the grocery store at the front of the home during this season, please love how it smells when they first walk in!

9. Make a dried orange and spice garland
Dried orange slices are inexpensive, pretty, and perfect for fall decorating (as well as Christmas). You can dry your own in the oven or buy them.
The natural aroma will be subtle, but you can refresh the garland by adding a small amount of sweet orange essential oil to one of the orange slices every few days.
Hang the finished garland across a mantel, kitchen window, open shelving, or entryway mirror. You can do this during the autumn and Christmas season. Kids love this activity too!

10. Add autumn fragrance to freshly cleaned trash cans
Trash cans are one place where fragrance should never replace cleaning.
Empty the trash, wash the can with the autumn all-purpose cleaning spray in this post, and let it dry completely. Once it is clean, lightly spray the inside with your DIY autumn room spray or a plant-based fabric and room spray. Or even a few drops of Autumn essential oil to the bottom of the trash can!
Pay special attention to the underside of the lid when you clean, where food residue and moisture can collect. Allow everything to dry before adding a new bag.
This trick also works well for small bathroom and office trash cans!

11. Create small fall fragrance zones
You do not need the same strong scent in every room. Instead, create small fragrance zones throughout the house.
Try breaking it down like this:
- Use apple or citrus in the kitchen.
- Pumpkin and ginger in the living room.
- Place cedarwood or cinnamon near the entryway.
- Choose softer vanilla or woodsy scents for the bedroom.
This makes your home feel more layered and inviting while preventing competing fragrances from becoming overwhelming. It also helps you use less product because the fragrance is placed intentionally rather than sprayed everywhere.

12. Let real fall food provide the fragrance
One of the easiest ways to make your house smell like fall is also the most obvious: make something that naturally smells delicious.
Try baking one of these fall favorites:
- Cinnamon apples
- Pumpkin muffins (this is our favorite recipe, we cut the sugar in half though)
- Apple crisp
- Homemade granola
- Maple-roasted nuts
- Pumpkin bread
There is nothing better than the smell of fall baking!
A chemist’s note about “non-toxic” fragrance
I thought this would be good to clarify…I prefer the phrase “healthier home fragrance” because no ingredient is automatically safe for every person, pet, concentration, or method of use. All of these tips are considered “non-toxic” by industry standards, but that is just a recognizable term. I think it is helpful to call these tips “better for you” or “healthier” than traditional methods.
Final thoughts
Making your home smell like fall is easy! Start by removing trapped odors, cleaning overlooked areas, and washing fabrics. Then introduce seasonal scents with one of these wonderfully scented ideas.
A few intentional touches can give your home that cozy pumpkin-and-apple feeling without overwhelming the air or adding another complicated task to your fall routine. And it will boost your mood too!
