Believe it or not, you don’t need expensive cleaning products and large amounts of time to clean your shower. It is all about easy methods and keeping up with your shower to keep it sparkling clean.

Clean Your Shower After Using It

The number one shower cleaning hack is simply clean your shower after you have used it. The warm steam and hot water soften soap scum and hard water buildup, making everything far easier to wipe away. The steam loosens residue on tile and grout so your cleaning takes less time and gives you better results. So next time you’re ready to tackle the shower, do it immediately after you’ve stepped out!

Make This DIY All-Purpose Cleaning Spray For Everyday or Weekly Use

While we have several speciality cleaners for different shower surfaces, this all-purpose one is still everyone’s favorite. It is safe for grout, natural stone, and all surfaces. Vinegar is so great for hard water, but it can damage grout and natural stone, so an all-purpose cleaner makes a better choice.

This particular one is going to be really successful when you use it often. You can spray it daily after showering, then wipe off. Or do a weekly clean. Regular maintenance is the key for it working well.

Ingredients:

Directions:

1. Add the ingredients to a spray bottle.
2. Shake gently before spraying it.
3. Spray the surface after taking a shower, wipe with a microfiber cloth.
4. For weekly use, spray the entire surface. Let it sit for a few minutes, scrub off with a sponge or electric scrub brush.

Squeegee After Each Use

Another incredibly simple and extremely effective shower cleaning hack is to squeegee your shower door after every use. It won’t eliminate hard water spots entirely, but it can cut your cleaning time by up to 75% because it stops water from drying on the glass. I’ve been doing this for about ten years, and it has made a huge difference in how quickly I can clean. I also recommend getting a squeegee that hangs on your shower nozzle (this is the one I have in the picture below) so it’s always within reach and never misplaced.

Use An Electric Scrub Brush For A Deeper Clean

One of the BEST purchased I have made is an electric scrub brush. I bought this particular one in 2022, and it is still going strong. If you only have one cleaning tool in your home, I think an electric scrub brush is the best choice. It not only cuts down cleaning time, but it can be more effective than just using a sponge. It keeps my shower tile so clean!

Wipe Fixtures With Microfiber

Like the tip we shared to always squeegee your shower door after each use, it is also very important to wipe all the fixtures, handles, and faucets with microfiber. This will eliminate any hard water drops from staying and causing stains. I wipe everything really well in my shower, and now I don’t deep clean them more than every few months!

Make A Citric Acid Paste For Hard Water On Faucets

If you haven’t kept up with hard water very well, you can make this DIY citric acid paste to magically remove all hard spots on faucets or other hardware. This can also be used for the shower door! Recipe is found in our DIY citric acid paste post.

Use The Pink Stuff Scrub and Foaming Bathroom Cleaner

One of the only store-bought cleaners I always keep on hand is The Pink Stuff. It’s my go-to for tough hard-water buildup, and if your shower door or tile is looking rough, this scrub is the one I recommend every time. It’s the best I’ve tested, and honestly, there’s truly no DIY version that works the same. It’s still incredibly affordable too. I also love their foaming bathroom cleaner, which works wonders on tile. Sometimes you just need a little extra cleaning power, and these two products are my favorites!

Use The Peroxide/Baking Soda Method For Mildew

If you have mildew pop up on your grout or other spots in your shower, this DIY two-ingredient cleaner is the best. I use this on grout, but you can use this just about anywhere in your shower.

Keep The Shower Door Open After Use

This tip might seem simple, but it makes a huge difference: leave your shower door open for at least an hour after you’re done showering. Letting the air circulate helps dry out lingering moisture from the warm water. After trying this consistently over the years, I’ve noticed we rarely, if ever, get mildew spots. And on the days I’m in a rush and accidentally close the door right away, I notice a big difference…moisture lingers, and mildew shows up much more easily!

Keep A Vinegar Spray On Hand

This simple homemade vinegar spray—just vinegar and water—comes in handy for tackling water spots on your shower door. It also works well on hardware with lingering hard-water marks. While the citric acid paste I mentioned earlier is the more powerful option, I still like to keep this spray mixed and ready to go anytime I spot some hard-water build up especially on the glass. You can make a mix of 4 parts water to 1 cup vinegar. Just make sure you don’t use vinegar or citric acid on natural stone!
