Our Favorite Baby and Kid Halloween Costumes Through The Years

Halloween is one of our favorite times of the year! Our neighborhood looks like a scene straight out of Hocus Pocus on Halloween night. The streets are blocked off, families are everywhere, and the entire neighborhood comes alive. It is always such a fun and memorable night for both kids and adults.

Even though Halloween is over a month away, I like to start thinking about costumes in September. Shopping early gives us plenty of time to decide what everyone wants to be, plan any coordinating details, and find the best option without paying last-minute prices. Popular sizes and costumes can sell out quickly, so ordering early can also save a lot of stress!

Over the years, my kids have worn a mix of classic, adorable, and sometimes unexpected Halloween costumes. I wanted to put all our favorites together in one place in case you need a little inspiration for your baby, toddler, or big kid this year.

There is just something extra sweet about dressing up a baby for Halloween. These were some of our favorite costumes from the baby years. Baby Poodle Skirt Costume

A tiny Baby Poodle Skirt costume is absolutely precious! This is such a cute choice if you love nostalgic or vintage-inspired Halloween costumes. Add some cute Kid Cat-Eye Glasses, a little scarf, cardigan, or pair of saddle-style shoes to complete the 1950s look. This was Amelia’s first costume, and I love it to this day. Kitty Cat Costume

We did a Simple Kitty Costume for Amelia when she was three! It was easy to wear and cute for little girls of all ages. We used it for play time for many years after too.

Newborn Pumpkin Costume

You simply cannot go wrong with a Newborn Pumpkin Costume. It is classic, cozy, and perfect for a baby’s first Halloween. A soft pumpkin sleeper or bunting costume also keeps a newborn comfortable while still looking festive in pictures. Tucker was just one week old on his first Halloween, so he wore a tiny little pumpkin onesie.

Baby Pooh Bear Costume

Our little Winnie the Pooh Costume was another favorite. Pooh Bear is instantly recognizable, adorable, and easy for babies to wear. Look for a soft one-piece version that will keep your baby warm without having too many uncomfortable pieces. I loved this simple onesie with a hat when Tucker was 12 months old, and then layered with some warmer clothes. It was perfect!

Our Favorite Toddler and Kid Halloween Costumes

As the kids have gotten older, it has been so much fun to see their personalities come through in the costumes they choose. We have done everything from fairy-tale characters to Ghostbusters!

Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood Costume (seen in first photo) is a classic Halloween costume that always looks adorable. The red cape makes the entire outfit, and you can add a small basket to carry treats. It is also a fun option if you want to create a coordinating family costume with the Big Bad Wolf or Grandma.

Pink Princess

Princess costumes have definitely made several appearances in our house! They are easy to find, fun to accessorize, and often get worn long after Halloween is over. That makes them feel like a better purchase especially if your child already loves playing dress-up. The Pink One Shown Above with newborn Tucker was something Amelia used for year to play with after Halloween!

Unicorn Fairy

A Unicorn Fairy Costume is perfect for a child who loves sparkle, color, and a little bit of magic. You can combine a colorful dress or tutu with wings, a unicorn headband, and glittery shoes. This is also an easy costume to personalize with colors your child already loves. This is another one we wore many times after Halloween (shown in picture above)

Sheriff Inspired by Woody

A sheriff costume inspired by Woody from Toy Story is such a fun choice for little boys or girls. A cowboy hat, boots, vest, badge, and bandana can create the look without requiring a complicated costume. It is especially cute for kids who already love western clothes or cowboy boots.

We did something like this for Tucker, but we called him a vintage cowboy. He wore my dad’s old Gene Autry Shirt from the 50s, we bought a hat, sheriff star, and made a little belt holder for him. It was a hit (picture above).

Ghostbuster

The Ghostbusters Costume was perfect for Tucker when he was three! The jumpsuit and proton pack make it instantly recognizable. I bought glasses so he could really resemble Spangler (picture above) 🙂

Princess Anna

Princess Anna from Frozen Costume is another beautiful option, especially for kids who love Disney princesses but want something colorful and playful. Her cape and dress are perfect for cooler Halloween weather, and the braided hairstyle completes the look.

My Tips for Choosing Kids’ Halloween Costumes

After years of shopping for baby and kid Halloween costumes, I have learned a few things that make the process easier:

Start looking in September before popular costumes and sizes sell out.
Ask your child for a few choices instead of only one, especially if you are shopping on a budget.
Check the weather and make sure the costume can be layered if Halloween night will be chilly. We live in Texas, it can be warm or cold. I will layer paints and shirts under things if it gets cold suddenly.
Choose comfortable shoes because kids do a lot of walking while trick-or-treating.
Look for costumes or accessories that can be worn again for dress-up play.
Save favorite costumes for younger siblings, cousins, or friends.
Check resale groups and secondhand shops for costumes that may have only been worn once.

Sometimes the simple, unexpected ideas become the costumes you remember most.

Making Halloween Memories Together
