You might be surprised by some of the effective and often overlooked non-toxic options available. Here are a few staples you’ll find in my home. This is a perfect start for those who might be starting on a more effective, non-toxic home care journey.

Grow Room Spray

Instead of traditional room sprays, I use Grow Room Spray. What I love about it is its simplicity: pure essential oils that actually neutralize odors at their source, rather than just masking them. You won’t find any phthalates or formaldehyde in these ingredients, making for a truly refreshing and healthier atmosphere.

I have shared this brand for many years now. It is one of my favorite non-toxic hacks for your home! I keep bottles of it in the bathroom, kitchen, and bedrooms. Everyone says my home smells so good. I am especially excited about their fall scents which are incredible.

Zeolite Rocks

These little rocks are surprisingly powerful! Zeolite rocks are natural volcanic minerals with a unique porous structure. This structure allows them to trap and absorb various impurities from the air, including odors, excess moisture, and even some airborne toxins. I keep bowls or sachets of zeolite rocks in areas like closets, the refrigerator, and anywhere that could benefit from continuous, passive air purification.

On a side note, you will see these rocks typically marketed as aquarium rocks or something like that. It can be hard to find the larger ones like I used to, so I buy the smaller ones and they work well too.

Baking Soda

Good old baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is an absolute workhorse in my cleaning routine. Its mild abrasiveness makes it perfect for scrubbing sinks and countertops without scratching. It’s also a fantastic odor absorber – a simple box in the fridge or sprinkled in shoes works wonders. Plus, it’s a gentle whitener for various surfaces. This single ingredient replaces a multitude of specialized cleaners. Even if you aren’t a fan of making your own cleaners, everyone can benefit from utilizing baking soda. Tru Earth Laundry Strips

I switched to Tru Earth Laundry Strips several years ago. These ultra-concentrated strips are not only incredibly effective at cleaning clothes, but they’re also free from parabens, phosphates, added dyes, and chlorine bleach. The plastic-free packaging is a huge bonus, and they dissolve completely, leaving no residue behind. It’s a powerful clean with a much lighter environmental footprint. I have tested dozens of non-toxic laundry detergents over the last few years, but these continue to be my favorite.

Switching to More Non-Toxic Items Can Be Gradual

And remember, making the switch to non-toxic household items doesn’t have to be everything or all at once. By gradually incorporating these and other natural alternatives, you can significantly reduce harmful chemicals and create a healthier home for yourself and your family. As a chemist, I can confidently say that sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective – and the safest.
