I use microfiber cloths for mirrors, appliances, counters, screens, cabinets, and quick daily cleaning. Having several on hand also makes it easier to assign different cloths to bathrooms, kitchens, and general dusting.

Choose a washable set in a few different textures rather than constantly buying disposable cleaning cloths. If you take care of your microfiber, it will last you many years. I have had this set of microfiber cloths for 10 years, and this set for about 4 years.

Worth Buying: An Electric Scrub Brush

Fall is the perfect time to clean the areas that were easy to ignore during summer, including grout, tubs, showers, baseboards, window tracks, and outdoor furniture.

An electric scrub brush helps provide the mechanical action needed to loosen stubborn buildup without requiring as much hand scrubbing. This can be especially helpful when you are preparing your home for holiday guests or tackling areas that have not been deep cleaned recently.

Worth Buying: An Enzyme Cleaner

Enzyme cleaners are one of my favorite categories of cleaning products because they can help break down organic materials such as food residue, body oils, pet messes, and certain odors.

Enzyme cleaners are not the right solution for every type of stain, but they are a helpful addition when odor-causing organic residue is the main problem.

Worth Buying: A Handheld Steamer

A handheld steamer can be a useful multipurpose tool for loosening grime in small crevices, around faucets, along appliance edges, and inside window tracks.

Steam works through heat and moisture, which can soften certain types of residue and make them easier to wipe away. However, it should not be used on every surface. Always check the manufacturer’s care instructions before using steam on wood, laminate, painted finishes, natural stone, or delicate fabrics.

The best reason to buy a handheld steamer is its versatility. It should replace several specialty gadgets—not become another tool you never use.

Citric acid is one of my favorite ingredients for tackling mineral buildup and hard-water deposits on compatible surfaces.

You probably do not need separate sprays for every room and surface in your home. Buying too many specialty cleaners increases clutter and makes it more likely that products will expire before you finish them. This is one of those trendy things on social media right now, having a dozen cleaning products just to clean your kitchen or bathroom.

Instead, choose a dependable general cleaner, a suitable bathroom product, and a few targeted ingredients for specific problems such as mineral buildup or organic odors.

Skip: Mixing Baking Soda and Vinegar for Cleaning

I have to put this in here today because it is circulating around the internet again.This popular combination looks impressive because it bubbles, but the reaction causes the acid and base to begin neutralizing each other.

The fizz can provide a little physical movement, but it does not automatically create a powerful cleaner. In most situations, you will get better results by choosing either an acidic product or an alkaline product based on the type of residue you are trying to remove. Sometimes, you can use them together (like to break up a carpet stain), but this will strictly be when applied separately and to break up certain stains on fabric.

Skip: Gimmicky Single-Purpose Gadgets

Be cautious with cleaning tools designed to handle one tiny job. Before purchasing one, ask yourself whether a microfiber cloth, scrub brush, vacuum attachment, or steamer could already do the same thing. There is nothing worse than buying another gadget that takes up space and you only use once in a blue moon.
