The 3-Ingredient Toilet Cleaning Powder That Makes Cleaning FUN

 Remember, this is a cleaning solution you can use along with your DIY toilet bowl cleaner. We will explain more below the recipe plus disinfecting tips.

What You’ll Need:

Just three simple items for a dazzling clean toilet.

• 1 cup Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate, NaHCO3​)
• 1/4 cup Citric Acid (The secret fizzy ingredient!)
• 15-20 drops Purify Essential Oil Blend (or Lemon, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus for a fresh, clean scent!)

How To Mix It Up:

1. In a mixing bowl, pour in your baking soda and citric acid.
2. Add your Purify Essential Oil drops directly into the dry mixture.
3. Use a whisk or fork to thoroughly combine all the ingredients. Make sure there are no clumps, especially of the citric acid, to ensure an even fizz.
4. Transfer your fantastic powder into an airtight jar or container. A mason jar works perfectly! Label it clearly.

Pro-Tip: If you live in a very humid environment, you might notice the mixture clump slightly over time. That’s just the citric acid reacting with airborne moisture. It’ll still work! Just break it up with a spoon before use.

How to Clean with This Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner:

1. Grab about 3 tbsp or 1/4 cup of your homemade toilet powder (depending on how much “fizz” you want!).
2. Sprinkle the powder directly into your toilet bowl, aiming for the water and sides.
3. Immediately, you’ll see a satisfying fizzing action! This is the powder getting to work.
4. Allow the fizz to do its thing for 15-30 minutes. For tougher rings, you can leave it longer.
5. Give the bowl a quick brush with your toilet brush. The fizz will have loosened grime, making scrubbing minimal.
6. Now just a simple flush!

Chemistry Corner: Why Does It FIZZ?

There is a simple chemical reaction that occurs in this baking soda citric acid toilet cleaner! This powder works because of a classic acid-base reaction when it hits water. The Baking Soda (NaHCO3​) is a mild base (alkaline), and the Citric Acid is an acid!

When these two dry powders come into contact with water (H2​O), the magic begins:

NaHCO3​ (s)+C6​H8​O7​ (aq)→Na3​C6​H5​O7​ (aq)+H2​O (l)+CO2​ (g)

This reaction produces sodium citrate (a salt), water, and most importantly, carbon dioxide gas (CO2​). It’s the rapid release of this carbon dioxide gas that creates all those fun, satisfying bubbles and fizz! These bubbles act like tiny scrubbing agents, helping to lift and loosen dirt, grime, and hard water stains from the porcelain.

The Purify Essential Oil (or your chosen blend) adds a powerful, clean scent and typically contains compounds with natural antimicrobial properties, contributing to a truly fresh and hygienic result. The essential oils main roll is for scent though. We all want a nice smelling toilet after cleaning!

Homemade Toilet Cleaning Routine With This DIY Toilet Cleaning Powder And Our Popular Classic Toilet Cleaner

Weekly Routine (Every 7-10 Days): Your Classic DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner

1. 1. Use the DIY toilet bowl cleaner, every 7-10 days. Coat the toilet and rim, scrub well. Allow to sit for a few minutes before flushing.

Why it works weekly: This routine is perfect for preventing everyday scum and minor hard water rings from forming, keeping your toilet looking great with minimal effort.

Monthly Reset (Every 3-4 Weeks): Your New 3-Ingredient Fizzing Powder

1. 1. Once a month or so, you can add this toilet powder to your cleaning routine. The powerful fizz will have loosened most of the grime. Give it a gentle brush to ensure everything is lifted, then flush.

Why it works monthly: This provides a deeper, more active clean that tackles accumulated buildup and mineral stains that might start to creep in despite weekly efforts, ensuring your toilet stays pristine without harsh chemicals.

Disinfecting The Toilet:

Remember, disinfecting and cleaning are always TWO SEPARATE STEPS. Along with your cleaning routine, you need to disinfect the toilet, especially around the outside. After you clean the toilet, follow up with a disinfecting every few weeks or as needed. I use either the DIY Lysol spray, homemade disinfecting spray, or Force of Nature.
